I finally have a chance! For the first time in years, I will get a shot at the GCWA World Championship at GCWA Homecoming and I did it by beating Lurrr. I’ve proven that this won’t be the same Ed Houston as in OCW. This won’t be the Ed Houston that gets to the big match, only to come crashing down short of my goal. This week I have another chance to prove that I’m not the same Ed Houston as in OCW. I have a chance to beat a man that I’ve never beaten before in Chad Vargas. In the past, I’ve struggled with the match before the big match. Despite my best efforts, I’ve fallen victim to the classic trap game. It’s caused me to stall out and even when I’ve been able to pull through in the big match, I made it a lot more difficult on myself. Chad Vargas is the most dangerous opponent that I could face in a potential trap match. He’s wildly inconsistent but when he shows up, he makes you think the South really will rise again. If I don’t show up ready to fight, he could lead that rebellion and make history itself change course.
The scene opens up with the cameras flying through a packed parking lot. As the camera skies up, we see roller coasters in the distance. The camera flies through an entrance, revealing that we are at Six Flags Over Texas. The camera slowly moves down to eye level where we see Ed Houston and Bob Black walking through the entrance.
Bob: “Are you sure this is where we’re supposed to go?"
Houston: “Well I mean we got through the entrance with these tickets so I would guess so.”
Bob: “I can’t believe Hunter gave you these tickets to Six Flags.”
Houston: “It’s just for a meet and greet.”
Bob: “But he could have picked anyone on the roster and he picked you. And the Meet and Greet isn’t until 6. We basically have the whole day to ride rides.”
Houston: “He wants GCWA to reconnect to the community. That’s it. He thought a young, high flyer would be the best do to that. It’s not like he could send The Big Bifford on any rides.”
Bob: “Come on, Ed. You’re smarter than that. You can be the company man here. Do you know how great that would be for you? You could be the biggest star in Texas. I’ve already gotten more tv time in the past two weeks than in the past 2 years. Hunter wants you to be the guy. You should be the guy.”
Houston: “I’m not gonna do it. I’ll do the stuff I would normally do but that’s it. This is something I would do anyway. Meet and Greets are nothing, but I’m not going to be some company yes man. I will fight my way up the ladder.”
Bob shakes his head. “I hope you change your mind. It would be easier for both of us.”
Houston: “It would be easier for both of us if you liked roller coasters. But it’s harder for you that you don’t.” Houston points to the New Texas Giant. “Let’s ride that.”
Bob gulps but walks over and gets in line.
The scene shows a quick montage of Ed and Bob riding the ride and ends as they get off of it.
Bob looks miserable.
Houston: “See, maybe you should leave the backstage politicking to me. You can’t even handle a ride.”
Bob: “What does that have to do with anything?”
Houston: “You can’t handle the thrills, man! You got to be able to handle the highs and the lows. You’re on a low and you look absolutely terrible!”
Bob mumbles to himself: “Whatever. Let’s ride some more rides. I can prove to you I have what it takes.”
A montage follows with Ed and Bob continuing to ride rides. It flashes through several different ones, a spinning one, another roller coaster, a water ride, the entire time Bob continues to look more and more miserable.
The montage stops.
Ed smiles as Bob can only frown.
Houston: “Well man. That was a fun day. I’m proud of you for trying to hang but I know you can’t quite hang.”
Bob looks undeterred. “One more ride.”
Ed looks at his watch. “We can’t right now. We need to go.”
Bob looks both upset and relieved but nods and follows Ed.
They walk to the center of the park where a big tent is set up. As 6 pm hits, Ed walks inside the tent. A voice speaks over a loudspeaker situated in a tent.
“Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the future of GCWA, The Rocketman, the High Flyer, the Future GCWA World Champion, Ed Houston."
Houston raises his hand as the fans cheer for him. He takes a mic in his hand.
Houston: “I don’t know about all that, but I am a GCWA superstar and I’m excited to be here today. Check out our show this week and our first pay-per-view GCWA Homecoming next week.”
A few kids cheer. Houston signs a few things and posses for some pictures while Bob watches, a jealous look overcoming his face as the meet and greet continues.
The meet and greet comes to a close as a Six Flags employee walks over to Ed.
Employee: “Ed, on behalf of Six Flags at the request of GCWA, we’d like to take you on a VIP tour that includes a very nice dinner. Would you please follow me?”
Houston looks at the employee in disbelief. “VIP dinner?”
Employee: “Yes and tour.”
Houston shakes his head. “No, no. A meet and greet is one thing but I don’t need to be wined and dined.”
Bob looks incredulously at Ed. “Come on, Ed.”
Houston shakes his head harder. “No, let’s go ride some more rides, Bob.”
Bob looks disappointed. “Ed, I’m going to go on this tour. You might not want the help but I’m your agent. I’m going to give you some help.”
Houston puts his foot down. “I don’t want you to go either Bob.”
Bob looks at Ed and shakes his head. “I know you don’t but I’m going to help your career.”
The employee walks away with Bob following as Ed looks on, a hurt look on his face, as the scene fades to black.
Despite what Bob seems to think, I don’t need help to win my match this week or at GCWA Homecoming. All I need to do is focus. Chad Vargas hasn’t reached his previous height in years. The guy has been headed in a straight downward spiral. He barely shows up in the ring and even then he just clings to some made-up glory days like the defeated traitors he chooses to support.
Chad is stuck in the past, always has been, always will be. He’ll walk into that ring expecting to see the same Ed Houston that he saw in OCW, the one that couldn’t beat him and Roach instead of the one that just beat Lurrr. That will be his downfall this week. It might be a trap game for me but Chad can’t have trap games. He’s never looking forward, only looking back. I’m surprised he didn’t bring Bob Greiner in here with him. He’s the only guy that keeps him relevant and the only big name he can seem to beat. Chad will continue to look back at the past, while I fly past him this week. My focus can only be on the present. I’m too close to my ultimate goal to look any further than the next day. Instead of making backroom deals, I’m going to continue to go out to that ring and fight and win. It doesn’t matter what Chad has accomplished in the past or even the two no-names he’s beaten since he’s joined GCWA. If you want to be the guy on top you have to win tough matches when you have nothing to gain and everything to lose. In OCW, I constantly proved that I wasn’t the guy who could do that. Even when you win the big match, having a letdown beforehand isn’t acceptable. It won’t be acceptable when I’m in the ring with three of the toughest guys I’ve ever faced.
So I need this win, more than anyone could realize. Chad would certainly like this win, but his legacy is already established while mine is nebulous. On Friday night, I will be asked the question, “Are you ready to be the man?” For the first time. I wish I knew the answer, I think I know the answer but the always explosive Chad Vargas stands in my way. I’ll give him a flight lesson and hope that the answer at the end of the countdown will be a yes. I believe that the last Friday before the pay-per-view will end with my hand raised. Now I just have to prove it to myself, to Chad Vargas, and to the rest of the GCWA universe.
