the sky is dark red and muggy on a September morning somewhere along the coast of California.
THe I-5 highway, otherwise known as the "Grapevine " for its many wineries along the route, is less busy than usual.
There is a lone bed and breakfast in the middle of the San Joaquin valley, The Red Wine Inn, run by a lovely old white couple in their 60s that us very popular with wary travellers.
The old woman is dusting the counter down in the front desk/ kitchen area as a bell is triggered by someone opening the door. The smoke from the fires have completely covered the sun and makes it hard to see. A tall dark figure walks in and places an envelope on the counter.
" I need to occupy all 5 rooms for 3 days." He says.
The old woman puts her duster down. She is elated, business has been slow. She counts the money and realizes it's way more than the cost.
"Sure thing. I'll get the rooms ready. Will anyone else be joining you.?" She asks.
The man doesn't answer and starts to head back to the car. " let me know when the rooms are ready."
2 hours later.
TLS is cruising down the Grapevine on a vintage 1953 Indian Chief motorcycle.
He takes the exit and comes upon the sign to the Red Wine Inn.
The "No Vacancy" sign is blinking as he stops in.
"Interesting". He thinks to himself. The Inn is never fully occupied. He was wanting to stop in and have the old woman's blueberry scone. He looks through the window and doesn't see the old couple.
TLS turns the knob and opens the door slowly.
A head pops up from behind the front desk. It's a face TLS doesnt not recognize.
"Hello there. Sorry no vacancy." The man days.
"Where are Lucinda and Herb?" TLS asks.
The man smiles "oh they are visiting their grandchildren."
"Are there any blueberry scones?"
The man shakes his head. " sorry. All out. Hey I'm pretty busy with a packed house. You can try the motel 6 at the next exit."
"Thanks." TLS gives the man a nod and walks out the door.
TLS:seems like I'll always be an outsider. My golden opportunity taken away, vacated.
TLS hops on the motorcycle and begins to ride away..... 15 minutes into the ride TLS remembers that the old couple never had any children.........
To be continued?
