I continue to fly high! In what could have been a real momentum killer, I emerged victorious against Chad Vargas at Friday Night Inferno. I now get to head into my career-defining world championship match with arguably more momentum than everyone else. Derek Mobley hasn’t wrestled in ten years and just got laid out by Lurrr. I beat Lurrr and then he responded by not taking another match and getting banned from the arena last week. He might have appeared at the end of the show, but an old guy like him needs a lot longer to shake off the rust. The Big Bifford might be the only person is on more of a roll than I am and that’s not just because the only way he can stand up is if Earl and the Intern send him down a skate ramp. Things have been going well for him. He took out Dylan Thomas, he’s made a ton of human meat money, and he’s racked up wins. But if there was any person that recent history has said won’t win this match it’s him. Having a big heart isn’t the same as wrestling with heart and The Big Bifford is more likely to have a massive heart failure than to show that heart in the ring. This time, the championship belt can rest easy, it will not be forced to stretch out to fit Bifford. At GCWA Homecoming, the GCWA World Championship belt is going to its new home. It’s going to the home of someone desperate for a world championship. At GCWA Homecoming, it will be time to look to the future of GCWA as The Rocketman goes from outsider to biggest ambassador and I will do it my way. Before that though, I have to have a little homecoming of my own.
The camera lingers over the city of Houston. It lowers to ground level as it passes down the streets. It slows down as it reaches a large, gated off building. Johnson Space Center appears at the bottom of the scene as a car pulls up to it.
Ed Houston eagerly jumps out of the car. A worried-looking Bob Black follows him out a second later.
Bob: “Why are we here, Ed?”
Houston: “They had good flights to Houston this week, especially from Dallas and I thought it would be cool to have a homecoming of sorts before GCWA Homecoming.”
Bob: “You know Hunter would really prefer if you were in the gym right now.”
Houston: “Is Hunter here right now?”
Bob: “No.”
Houston nods: “Then we are going to do this.”
Bob: “It’s just such a good opportunity to win. I mean you saw Mobley get laid out on Friday and you won!”
Houston: “I know. I was there Bob. I don’t want to talk about that right now though. I feel like you’re trying to get more out of this than just a championship for me.”
Bob: “Of course I am! You have the chance to be the face of an entire company. I want that for you.”
Houston: “But I feel like you want that for yourself."
Bob: “What do you mean?”
Houston: “You’ve been in the background for years. You were never on a show. You could have been considered a figment of my imagination and now you’re being asked to ref number one contender’s’ matches and getting television time because of Hunter and you love being that guy. Don’t lie.”
Bob: “Whatever Ed.”
Houston: “Say I’m wrong.”
Bob: “Ed, I’m trying to help you out. We’ve been struggling for years. You were signing autographs for money like 2 years ago. I don’t want that again.”
Houston: “Say I’m wrong, Bob.”
Bob sighs but doesn’t. He looks hurt but lets out a slight nod. Ed looks triumphant and after a brief pause, keeps going.
Houston: “I get it, Bob. It feels good to have people care about you. But I’m going to do it my way. So I’m going to watch this rocket take off here in a few minutes and enjoy my own little homecoming and then we’ll go to the gym. Okay?”
Bob reluctantly nods.
Houston: “Good. You want to join?”
Bob nods. “I’m sorry, Ed.”
Houston: “Okay.”
Houston walks in front of the building where he stares across the gated fence. Bob is behind him, sulking a bit. Houston looks down at his watch as the seconds turn to a minute. The countdown is about to begin when someone taps Ed on the shoulder.
Ed jumps instinctively. He looks ready to fight but a wave of relief washes over him as he takes in the face of his attacker. It is Jim Johnson, one of the many bosses Ed had during his NASA tenure.
Houston: “Jim!?”
Johnson: “I thought that was you, Ed. No need to attack.”
Houston relaxes a little as he realizes he was tensed up. “Sorry man, I never know who I will run into at a NASA base and I never know how they will react when they figure out who I am.”
Jim laughs. “Yeah, I can imagine. You did cost us and the taxpayers millions of dollars.”
Houston blushes a little. “Definitely not my finest moment.”
Johnson: “What brings you here, anyway?”
Houston: “I just wanted to take this place in. I heard there was going to be a rocket launch today. Had to check that out.”
Johnson: “They never get old.”
Houston: “Why are you here?”
Johnson: “Oh you know, I’ve moved up a bit. They put me in charge of running this place.”
Houston: “Congrats! That’s awesome.”
Johnson: “It’s a lot of work. What are you up to nowadays?”
Houston: “I’m a wrestler.”
Johnson: “A wrestler?”
Bob Black interjects. “He’s about to be in charge of running GCWA.”
Johnson: “GCWA?”
Houston: “My promotion. Shut up, Bob.” Bob recoils.
Johnson: “Oh that’s pretty cool. I never figured you’d do that, but I always expected big things out of you.”
Houston: “Thanks, Jim.”
Johnson: “No problem, Ed. People shouldn’t be judged at their worst and while I promise I can’t get you a job here if wrestling falls through I might have something you’d be interested in.”
Houston: “What?”
Johnson: “Space X has been working closely with us. You know, trying to develop their own spacecraft for civilian travel.”
Houston: “Yeah, I’ve heard about that, so?”
Johnson: “So, they are looking for a civilian to test things out. To be one of the first to go to outer space with their stuff. I know that was always a big dream of yours.”
Houston can’t hide the look of excitement if he tried. “Yeah.”
Johnson: “I think they’re moving pretty quickly. Like wanting a commitment from someone this week, quickly. But you might call them?”
Houston nods, dumbfounded.
Jim Johnson smiles. “Drop my name if you do.” He hands Ed a white business card, Space X written cleanly in black. He nods again and points to Bob. “Nice to meet you.” Bob smiles curtly and Jim walks inside.
Bob: “Wow. It’s a good thing you have a world championship match this week, right Ed.”
Houston ignores Bob.
Bob: “Right, Ed?”
Houston: “I need to call them.”
Bob: “What about the gym?”
Houston: “The gym can wait.”
Bob: “What about the rocket?”
Ed is already running to the car though. The camera focuses in on the panic on Bob Black’s face before fading to black.
This match is filled with legends. It would not be the smartest move to take time off to follow a passion that had left me behind, but it is what I will do this week. Maybe this will allow me to blast off to higher heights at GCWA Homecoming, maybe it will lead to me missing the match entirely. Maybe putting some doubt into our fatal four-way will lead to the drama the GCWA fans deserve. It will show how everyone can adapt. We already Lurrr is far too old and slow to properly adapt. I showed the GCWA universe that weeks ago. He won’t be able to sneak attack anyone which has been his most effective strategy since he’s been back. I like Mobley, I really do. Having to beat him for the belt will be tough but he knows that I’m the future of GCWA. He looked into my eyes weeks ago and said it to my face in the ring. It’s time for Halley’s comet to come by and make good on the hype. It will live up to the hype and end with a flight lesson, unlike anything Mobley’s seen. Then there is The Big Bifford. He is the only one to defeat me in GCWA and I know it will be tough to avoid that. Since then though, I’ve been on fire. I’ve exercised past demons and knocked off Lurrr and Chad Vargas, two men I never could beat in OCW. As the countdown winds down, I will find just enough from those wins to carry into this match and this time, I won’t suffer the Biff End. I will fly higher and I will give him the biggest flight lesson the GCWA universe has ever seen. It will lead to a meteor sized crash that will leave these three GCWA dinosaurs extinct.
