Its’ been a long time since Dan and Chris have been back to their old college alma matter for a visit.
Nothing about the bar has changed since college, and when Dan comes around the table with a couple of beers the first sip tastes just like when Chris and Dan were students here partying on a weekend after their studies.
“Drink up, bro,” Dan says, placing a pint of beer in front of Chris. “We’re celebrating our birthday just a tad bit early.”
Their buddy Nick joins them for this slight reunion special. Nick has been one of their closest friends since they were in grade school. With Dan and Chris only a year a part it was easy to make most of the same friends. “I’ll get you boys something stronger once we’re back at the house.”
Chris’ heart almost stops before starting. He wasn’t too sure how Dan felt, but he could only speak for himself. “I don’t know about Dan, but I can’t stay with your parents, dude. I’ll just find another hotel.” One that isn’t experiencing a water main burst.
“Speak for yourself bro. I’ll be glad to stay with ya.”
It figures that Dan would be quick to respond with a yes. He’s had a crush on Nick since the 10th grade. It is beginning to make perfect since about why HE wanted to come back to their old college grounds.
Nick shakes his head. “Awesome Dan. I already called my mom. She insisted that you both stay; said she’d already changed the sheets in my old room.”
Dammit. The beer I just swallowed sits uneasily in my stomach. Chris thinks to himself. He continues thinking to himself.
I know Dan is all for this, but I certainly don’t want to impose, and the nearest hotel is thirty miles away. But I can’t let Nick know the real reason why I, for one, can’t crash at his parents’ house. I can’t stay there, and I definitely can’t tell him why.
“How’s the whole wrestling thing going for you boys?” Nick asks, reaching for the basket of bar snacks and taking a big handful. “I’m surprised you guys had the time to make it down here.”
Chris shrugs. “Work is going well that we are competing for a company that we had our start in ten years ago. The GCWA.”
“Oh, the company where you left as X Division champion?”
“Yes,” Chris responds. “I’m still the champion.”
“And he won’t let anyone forget that fact either. But after this weekend, both of us may be champion.”
“Is that so?” Nick retorts.
Dan nods his head up and down as he takes another sip of his beer. Back to the invite, Chris had been looking forward to these next couple days ever since Nick invited him to his father’s retirement party. And since Mr. Saunders was pretty much the second dad they had growing up, Chris told him that he wouldn’t miss it. That and the chance to just relax and get away from the city was a welcome distraction. Luckily, with the trip to Dallas and the birthday bashes going on over the weekend, the brothers decided it would be worth it.
Both Dan and Chris had gone to the one hotel in town, only to find it closed for repairs brought on by water damage from a pipe bursting last week.
Being back to this school is what helped the brothers get an athletic scholarship for college and remold their dreams into going to law school. Chris passed the bar on his first try and hit the ground running, racking up hours at one of the biggest corporate law firms in Nashville. And now, he gave up those dreams along with Dan to fulfill the wrestling business. Which hasn’t been all that bad considering he is a champion and could be double champion.
“Still, I appreciate both of you coming down to celebrate your birthday here. Since my divorce, my parents have been on my back twenty-four seven,” Nick grumbles. The split wasn’t pretty, he’d only been married for three months when they file divorce papers. Which was completely out of character for him. Neither Dan nor Chris know the full story, but they suspected they would get into all that once they were good and plastered. “Then this whole thing with Dad giving up the factory and…”
“How’d that end up working out?” Dan asks. “Hearing your dad had a heart attack was a shock.”
“Yeah, he wasn’t that old, and had seemed in good health.” Chris replies.
“Well, he’d been forced into early retirement and the future of his factory is hanging in the balance.” Nick utters in concern. “However, my sister’s taking over the place. I have no interest in learning to run some grease pit.”
“Your sister?” Chris questions. It seems that every time Ava comes up, Chris must keep a straight face. She seems to be one of the only things about this town that h ever missed, but Nick doesn’t know. He’d deck Chris if he ever knew that he had looked her way, hell, that he even thought her, and of course Chris wouldn’t blame him.
Bro code is pretty clear about these things. Those unwritten rules are genetically coded into every straight male before birth, you don’t hit on your best friend’s sister. You definitely don’t let your mind wander to what she looks like naked, and you sure as fuck don’t let you dick go stiff at that thought. We can see that Chris begins to force deep, measure breaths into his lungs
“Sounds like she’ll be busy.” Chris responds keeping his cool, almost off-hand, and waves down the bartender to get them another round.
“Damn, it’s barely seven and it seems like half the town’s in here getting hammered.” Dan quivers looking around the bar.
“Can’t blame them.” Nick casually glances at someone across the bar, and both brothers gaze follows. “Jared Brown’s over there with his third wife because it’s their anniversary or something. Out old buddy Jared has four kids now, if you can believe it.”
“How sad is your life that you can take your wife to a random bar on a weeknight for your anniversary?” Dan questions with disgust in his voice.
“Ah, shit.” Nick’s glaring at his phone, squinting at the screen in the bar’s dim lighting. “Ava just got in, so my mom wants us all at the house already.”
“Wait, she’s going to be there, too?” Chris questions before thinking better of it, but Nick just laughs.
“Of course, she is. She just gave up her apartment and moved back in to be closer to the plant.” Nick counts a couple of bills out of his wallet to pay for the tab. “This is my present to you boys for your birthday. Let’s get square and I’ll drive us over.”
Chris begins to question if the drinks have gone to his head. He seems to look forward to seeing Ava as much as he’s dreading sleeping under the same roof as her.
With that certain dread the boys and Nick exit the bar and head to their buddy’s house. This is definitely going to be a birthday weekend that neither brother will soon forget.

“Don’t take us getting shit-faced as an excuse to beat us Rodriguez and Savage. There really isn’t going to be any excuse for either one of you when Dan and I beat the holy shit out of you and claim our fourth tag team titles. You boys seem to think that making a name for yourselves at our expense is going to get you somewhere. Well, you both are sadly mistaking. I’m not as easy going as my brother makes me out to be. I have a mission here in GCWA. I want to claim all the gold and all the glory. I want to be double champion. I want it all. And this Sunday, the day of my birthday, I’m going to get the sweetest gift any guy could get for his birthday. GOLD. Rodriguez…Savage…it’s going to be one hell of a crazy ride. That, is the Gospel of Crazy Chris: Chapter FUCK verse YOU!”
